Sewershed Scale Green Infrastructure Design to Maximize Ecological Benefit

Kimberly S. Artita, Ph.D.

Sci-Tek

Philly is going green! But where and how much green stormwater infrastructure do we need to simultaneously reduce stormwater runoff and maximize our economic benefit? Dr. Artita will discuss evolutionary algorithms and their use as a decision-making tool in water resources. The talk will cover a case study on strategic sewershed-scale green infrastructure design based on PWD's Green Cities, Clean Waters triple bottom line analysis and green infrastructure cost estimates. The sewershed-scale design is identified by pairing the hydrologic/hydraulic model SWMM with a genetic algorithm.

Kimberly Artita recently defended her dissertation "Computer-based methods for watershed-scale hydrological ecosystem services management", at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She's been living in the Philadelphia area for 3 years and has been working as a consultant in PWD's Office of Watersheds as a CDM intern and most recently a Civil Associate II with Sci-Tek.  Her research interests include biologically-inspired computational methods, optimization, and hydrological ecosystem services. Dr Artita received her BS in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Hawaii and her MS in Geological Engineering from University of Nevada Reno.

Engineer's:  This seminar does qualify for 1.0 Professional Development Hour (PDH).  A Certificate of Attendance will be available on site for AWRA-PMAS members only.  The meeting price for non-members who wish to receive a 2012 Certificate of Attendance for the PDH is $10.00 ($3.00 for meeting + $7.00 for certificate).  Please note: all registrations for lunch orders close by 9:00 AM on the day of the presentation.  Thank you!
