A Geological Perspective on Stormwater Infiltration

Toby Kessler, PG and Trevor Woodward, PG

Gilmore and Associates, Inc.

Abstract: Understanding the geology of the Philadelphia area and processes involved with groundwater recharge is critical to design of stormwater infiltration facilities. The presentation will touch on glacial outwash sediments, urban fill, Wissahickon Schist bedrock, injection wells, and groundwater mounding, all of which influence groundwater recharge in our region. Investigative methods and project examples will be discussed.

Toby J. Kessler, PG is manager of Gilmore & Associates, Inc.’s geosciences department, with over 14 years of experience in geology, hydrogeology, and hazardous waste site assessment. Mr. Kessler has a Bachelors Degree in Geology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters Degree in Geosystems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Trevor G. Woodward, PG is an engineering geologist with over 14 years of experience in geotechnical and geologic investigations and field methods. He has a Bachelors Degree in Geology from Bloomsburg University. He is an active member of Gilmore’s Sustainable Resource and Green Infrastructure Team.
