American Street: An Innovative Approach to Project Implementation & Stormwater Management in an Urban Setting

ABSTRACT:
The American Street Improvement project consists of a two-mile urban roadway revitalization with a focus on improving accessibility and safety for all corridor users and providing significant green stormwater infrastructure to treat roughly 1.4M gallons of rainwater.
The challenging urban soil conditions within American Street required innovative engineering practices. To address these conditions, the design employed infiltration columns to bypass poor quality urban fill and alluvial soils and directly recharge stormwater into the favorable porous geologic formations below the site.
The project also includes a supplemental study that allows private property owners to disconnect their on-site stormwater runoff from the combined sewer and reroute runoff to the proposed GSI systems being installed along American Street, to help further reduce unmanaged impervious surfaces within Philadelphia.
SPEAKER BIOS:
Trevor Woodward, PG, Geotechnical Services Manager:
Mr. Woodward oversees office and field activities in the Geotechnical Department. With G&A since 2001, he interfaces with a variety of municipal and private clients. Areas of focus include foundation and subsurface investigations, karst hazard studies, stormwater infiltration investigations, slope stability and MSE analysis, forensic investigations, and consultation on engineering geology matters. He has presented on geology and GSI topics on behalf of numerous professional organizations.
Connor Smyth, PE – Project Engineer:
Mr. Smyth serves as a Civil Engineer in G&A’s Philadelphia Office. With a background in site design and land development, Connor works closely with the Philadelphia Water Department and the Philadelphia Streets department managing G&A’s on-call engineering contracts. Infrastructure improvements designed and constructed through these contracts include Green Stormwater Infrastructure, roadway realignments, streetscape design, historic preservation, intersection redesign, and ADA compliance throughout the City of Philadelphia.
