Abstract:  

The Little Patuxent Water Reclamation Plant in Howard County, Maryland discharges treated wastewater to the sensitive Chesapeake Bay watershed.  To meet very stringent effluent requirements, a $110 million project to retrofit the existing plant to provide Enhanced Nutrient Removal was undertaken. The project utilized an alternative project delivery method, Construction Management at Risk (GC/CM) approach.  Stantec provided services to this project that included conceptual evaluation, a demonstration study, final process modelling, design, and engineering support throughout construction for retrofitting the plant. The presentation will review several components as well as unique challenges and opportunities of the project.

  

 

Speaker Bio: 

Mr. Gerard J. Fernandes, P.E., C.Eng. has over 35 years of experience is extensive in water, wastewater and facility development and includes designs in multiple states and jurisdictions. His professional experience also includes planning, design, and construction administration of public works projects, including wastewater collection, pumping, treatment, and refuse; water supply, water distribution, treatment, storage; and site development.   Mr. Fernandes is a Senior Associate and Practice Leader at Stantec. Gerard is experienced with local and foreign firms on national and international projects through design and construction stages with schedule constraints; maximizing productivity and maintaining a very high morale among technical staff. He also has a strong background in technical report preparation, risk analysis, construction supervision, and sub-contractor management.

Mr. Santosh S. Gunavante, P.E. is an Environmental Engineer with 18 years of experience that specializes in water and wastewater treatment designs and developments.  He has executed projects in different types of civil engineering and surveying, with emphasis in the fields of water and wastewater collection, distribution, conveyance and treatment processes.  He has been involved from inception to completion of various projects with time and budget constraints and has secured good experience to economize and increase productivity.

Mr. Geoffrey K. Kolva, P.E. is a Civil Engineer for Stantec. Mr. Kolva has over 9 years of experience in all types of civil engineering with an emphasis in the field on water and wastewater. He has been engaged in a variety of projects in the area of water and wastewater treatment facilities and infrastructure, stormwater management design, commercial and residential land development, municipal engineering, land use approvals, planning and permitting.
