Tavis Dockwiller, is a principal Landscape Architect with over twenty years of experience in private practice and is the guiding influence for Viridian Landscape Studio. The firm’s work preeminently focuses on landscape architecture within an ecological framework. Her expertise encompasses master site planning and design for cities, campuses and parks. Recently completed projects include planning and design for a 250 acre site owned by Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Monroe, Michigan; service for the Community Design Collaborative of Philadelphia; the 2010 publication of High Performance Landscape Guidelines; and guidelines for the 21st Century Parks for New York City.

Stormwater problems usually begin when the landscape is disturbed, offsetting the hydrological cycle in a watershed. Traditional engineered solutions have not always mitigated the problems and often leave a fragmented, low diversity and un-attractive landscape. Restoring the balance is expensive and challenging. The session will feature ways to make successful stormwater projects that are an artful and functional improvement using basic stormwater BMPs.

Using both built work and work still on the boards, Tavis will profile projects both large and small from suburban to ultra-urban that treat stormwater as a resource. These projects illustrate the importance of understanding the relationship between soil, water and vegetation in order to reconnect them to restore and maintain healthy ecosystems. These projects all rely on a strong collaboration between civil engineers and landscape architects. They show how simple interventions can create fabulous, restorative, memorable places.
