Abstract:  

Beth Yount will be sharing information about the Penn State Extension program and their Master Watershed Steward Program (MWS). The MWS Program looks for volunteers who want to make a difference in their community. These stewards are provided training to help lead projects within their watersheds to help improve the health of our local rivers, streams, and natural resources.  

Beth will also share insights from her Soil Science background. Soil stewardship is critical to protecting water, producing food, supporting the built environment, and managing climate change. Despite its importance, soil is often treated as an abundant and fungible commodity, even among environmental protection practitioners. We will explore some current practices in Philadelphia, challenges to sustainable soil management, and potential solutions that are centered on soil conservation

Presenter Bio: Beth Yount is a statewide Penn State Extension water resources educator and the Master Watershed Steward Coordinator in Philadelphia County. She provides education about watershed health, safe drinking water, stormwater management, conservation practices, and sustainable soil stewardship.  She focuses her work in Philadelphia on adapting and implementing best management practices in heavily developed areas and educating residents about habitat management and the protection of riparian ecosystems and watersheds in the downstream environment. She has an MS in Soil Science from the University of California, Davis, and an MS in Sustainable Engineering from Villanova University.
